Consider the tiki reborn, at least in a line of interestingly branded tequila. Voodoo Tiki Tequila has built its image around the hand blown glass tiki gods waiting at the bottom of each bottle, along with a “magic” word on the back and the tiki legend. The bottles are enchanting and can be a great accent for a backyard tiki party and the tequila’s not half bad, in fact it’s pretty good. Beyond the platinum, reposado and añejo, the distillers also produce three flavored, very colorful tequilas.

The Tequila Inside

Voodoo Tiki Tequila is a 100% Weber blue agave, ultra-premium tequila distilled in the small Mexican town of Capilla de Guadalupe in the “Corazón de Los Altos” region of Jalisco. The area is known for producing top-knotch agave plants, which are allowed to grow for 10 years. Once harvested the pinas are steamed slowly in hornos (controlled ovens) for 50-72 hours, until the desired sweet agave flavor is reached. The baked agave is then pressed to release its sweet juices, which are then fermented, distilled twice and barreled as tequila.

The Tiki Inside

“Legend has it” that there’s magic inside each bottle of Voodoo Tiki, and I’m not speaking of the magic tricks you may think you can perform after downing its contents in a night. While neither the tequila nor the bottle have any actual magical powers, they are pieces of art and you can’t help but appreciate such a well-planned, beautifully designed and fantastic tasting spirit.

Each one-of-a-kind bottle is hand-blown with a glass tiki statuette inside (view video of how the bottle is made). This miniature, gentle giant stares with glowing eyes through the glass with a deep, audacious grin on his face. Under the direction of Master Artisan, Alehandro Nuramo, a team of 10 people work together create each bottle. Both elements, the bottle and the tiki, need to be formed at the same time, and while still hot, the two are joined, reheated to meld together, annealed and cooled. The art comes together in the finished bottle design, with hand etched palms and lettering, a natural wood cork and, just to top it all off, a hand-dipped wax seal. The back of the bottles are numbered, hand-signed and labeled with a magic word that defines the “power” the tiki inside possesses. You may find happiness inside, or maybe courage and possibly even fame or balance.

Traditional Tequilas

Añejo
Voodoo Tiki’s Añejo is surprisingly lighter than many other añejos. The nose is soft and rich with fruity earthiness that is a fine precursor to the soft palate that displays silky, sweet vanilla, cinnamon and the slightest hint of ginger. While this añejo may look and taste soft, it does follow the warm cognac-like finish customary to its type, but differs from others with a pleasing, much sprightlier agave kick that makes for fantastic straight sipping.

  • Aged a minimum of 1 year
  • Retails for around $60 for 750 ml bottle

Reposado
The Reposado produced by Voodoo Tiki is my favorite of their traditional tequila line because it conveys the feeling of diffused morning sunshine, true agave flavor and is perfectly sweet and silky at once. Sweet agave, lemon and lavender swirl in the nose with a vibrant, silky entry. The taste is seductively sweet, filled with sweet citrus, vanilla and agave and finishes with an airy, brandy-like agave feel.

  • Aged for 6 months
  • Retails for around $55 for 750 ml bottle

Platinum
The light, sweet liquid of Voodoo Tiki Platinum is a pleasant precursor to its aged colleagues. Herbs and fruit fill the nose with delicate sweetness, leading into the equally light flavor of mature agave and a touch of pear which also flashes an appearance in the quick, invigorating finish.

  • Retails for around $50 for 750 ml bottle

Other Voodoo Tiki Tequilas

Private Family Collection (“Coleccion Privada de la Familia” Extra Anejo):This limited edition tequila is nothing short of spectacular – deserving a straight 5 stars – and the price tag shows it. However, if you are looking for a very special tequila to bring out for a very special occasion the $1,200 is worth every penny. That price does include a handcrafted wood tiki box and four of the tequila’s glass tiki god shot glasses, but you will not be shooting this tequila because it is one of the smoothest sippers available in the tequila market. The drawback is that there are only 1,000 bottles of this available each year. You can find this extra anejo at DrinkUpNY.com or reserve it at the Voodoo Tiki Tequila website.Tasting Notes:
The Voodoo Tiki Extra Anejo has a sweet, gentle floral aroma with warm woody notes. It is ultra smooth and spectacularly silky with a deliciously soft, buttery palate with that wood lingering in the background. The agave flavor hits in the end with a bang and is a brilliant reminder that you are drinking a fine tequila with a yummy caramel and oak that slowly fades.More Voodoo Tiki:

  • Anejo 3 Years- Family Reserve aged for at least three years. Very limited availability as only 1,000 cases a year are produced. Retails for around $249.99 for 750 ml bottle
  • Gold Pirate’s Treasure- Traditional gold tequila with real gold flake inside.

Find Voodoo Tiki:

  • FL, GA, NY, NJ, MO & NV as of August, 2007
  • ME, OR, WA, TX, CA and NC in October, 2007
  • Looking to be in 20 more states by the middle of 2008
  • A few online spirits stores

Flavors Maximized

Infusing tequila was not allowed in Mexico when the idea of Voodoo Tiki Tequila began in 2001. So when the company wanted to pursue naturally flavored tequilas, they had to do it in the United States. Working with a US bottling company developed their ideal flavors using traditional infusion techniques: real fruit and no sugar or other sweetening additives. The result is a line of colorful, flavor-filled tequilas that are true to their roots. As of August, 2007 Voodoo Tiki produces three flavored tequilas although it’s not likely to stop there. Much like their vodka cohorts, Voodoo is thinking big when it comes to flavors and some of the proposed flavors (see list below) are surely going to push the limits of infused tequilas and the potential of easily flavored Margaritas as well as other favorite tequila cocktails.

Blue, Green & Pink All Over

Blue Dragon
This blue raspberry and kiwi infused tequila has a beautiful blue hue and a fantastic fruity flavor. It makes a fantastic, quick, blue Margarita by simply substituting Blue Dragon for unflavored tequila and blue curaçao for the triple sec.

Desert Rose
A pale pink tequila, Desert Rose is infused with the fruit of the prickly pear cactus. It is super sweet in the most natural way possible, but lacks the sugary aspects of many other sweet infusions. Again, Desert Rose is a fantastic replacement for regular tequila in your favorite Margarita recipe with an extra bonus: prickly pear is known for reducing the effects of hangovers: although too much tequila of any kind is not going to prevent any hangover.

Green Dragon
Voodoo Tiki’s Green Dragon is a lime-infused tequila that displays the fruit to perfection. I found when mixing this green colored tequila in a Margarita that it’s best to skip the lemon and lime juice, use just a touch less sour mix and make up for those losses with a little more triple sec. The lime tequila intensifies the traditionally flavored Margarita.

Flavored tequilas retail for around $30 for 750 ml bottle

Other infused flavors in the works for Voodoo Tiki:

  • Black Dragon- coffee
  • Coco Paradisio- coconut
  • Crimson Lord- melon
  • Mandarin Warrior- mandarin
  • Midnight Warrior- chocolate
  • Red Dragon- strawberry
  • Ruby Dragon- black cherry

Enjoy Voodoo Tiki Tequila

This is where it gets really fun with these tequilas. The unflavored tequilas are fantastic for all your traditional tequila cocktails and the flavors, those are made for a Margarita. Not only are they great for opening up the flavored Margarita spectrum, they also sparkle on their own. Whether it be on the rocks, shaken or just chilled, each has their own uniquely flavored, invigorating sweetness.

As with any new liquor you’re introducing yourself to, I recommend you sit down with a straight sipper, smelling and tasting the spirit. In this way you will fully appreciate the flavor and have a good idea of appropriate flavor pairings and with that knowledge you can create your own favorite Margarita blends. For a quick, new flavor you can also simply substitute one of the flavored tequilas for regular tequila in the traditional Margarita recipe, although when Green Dragon is used I suggest holding the lime juice.

Here are a few flavored Margaritas that have the potential to make some colorful party drinks.
